Core Minutes 1/5/2016
ScienceTools: (Jim) is creating builds of the new version of healpix (3.30) which is required by the new code Eric has written. He has run into a snag: it's not possible to build this version on rhel5. Eric's new stuff involves changes to many packages. The only way to continue to support rhel5 fully (retain ability to incorporate changes) would be to back out Eric's work and stick with the old healpix version. [Consensus we don't want to back out Eric's work.] (Heather) The group in Saclay was hoping we could continue to support rhel5 through this month, then start supporting rhel7. It seems we are already cutting off support. She will find out if they're ok with continuing to use the ST version they now have until we can give them a rhel7 build. And she'll continue work on building all the externals needed by ST on rhel7. (Richard) Support for rhel7 should also include RM builds, involving changes to the RM db. Should we also be thinking about moving all builds to Jenkins? (Joanne) Supporting RM builds on a new platform involves more than db changes. Those are reasonably straightforward and well-documented in Tom Stephens' notes. We also need to build the RM programs on the new platform. The RM code itself is unlikely to cause problems — it's just garden-variety C++ — but it depends on QT libraries. Making a new QT build is not always trouble-free.
Homework: Heather will confer with David and other interested parties; Joanne will look into work required to get RM to make rhel7 builds.
Confluence upgrade: (Tom) The upgrade took place as scheduled over the break. He's not aware of any fall-out.
IFC: (Richard) The remainder of our allocation (for 2015) is now at SLAC, though there are still some internal bureaucratic hurdles to be surmounted before we can use it.
Externals (Heather) There is now a RH6-64 build of ROOT v5.34.34. It took a couple of iterations due to some misstatements in the ROOT build instructions for handling some of the optional add-ons. The same steps should be used for a RH7 build. The current plan is to complete the external upgrade for GR and ST. We are currently waiting for the fix to tip promised by the FSSC for the cfitsio v3370 upgrade. Once that is complete, we will move to python 2.7.10, cfitsio v3370, ROOT v5.34.34, and heapix 3.30.
